With a world ravaged by the chokehold of a global pandemic, so much has changed in a year. Almost every aspect of life has been either adjusted or dismantled due to the current world events and fashion is obviously no exception. Not being able to fully communicate with others in person and through our clothing has made it very hard, however, many believe this will jumpstart a type of clothing renaissance. People are finding their personal styles through months of self discovery at home. The questions of who we are and what we value are at the forefront of this style revolution. With that being said, here are some trends to look out for moving forward.
Underwear As Outerwear
By no means is this a new trend, however, we are going to be seeing this trend manifested in different forms. This particular trend seems to be shifting away from the more modern lace bodysuits we have seen since around 2018 and moving toward a 19th century and mid century modern twist. Lace up corsets, typically found in pastel hues, are going to be huge this upcoming spring and summer as well as corset inspired silhouettes like corset tank tops and sweetheart necklines. Some more mid century modern examples of this trend can be found in vintage slip dresses and nightgowns which came from the increase in thrift shopping in recent years. This trend could possibly be driven by the fact that people have been spending so much time in lounge wear and underwear while at home. The resurgence of these pieces will no doubt bring the comfort and confidence from your home to the reopening world.
Vintage Inspired Eclecticism
This is just an umbrella term for some of the similar styles we may see trending this year. Many comparisons have been made within recent years between Generation Z and the hippie era Baby Boomer generation. Whether it be clothing, involvement in politics, or the drive of pop culture, Generation Z will be the driving force for the resurgence of the hippie attitude and dress. We may see this through many different types of 70s silhouettes, more notably in swirling patterns, funky colors, glitters, fur trim, suede, fringe, and more. While being confined to the walls of their homes, young people that were possibly held back by high school dress codes, societal norms, and the gaze of others will be able to experiment comfortably with these totally over the top patterns and vintage pieces. Once again, thrifting has become mainstream and Generation Z is by far the most environmentally conscious to date. Meaning they want these funky pieces older generations might have just cleaned out from the back of their closets. This appetite for out of the box clothing will only continue to prosper as restrictions let up around the world in regard to the pandemic. Comfy clothing will be left in the pajama drawer as more and more search for the most unique get-up possible. People will be emerging from the darkness of a world disaster in their vintage best.
Detached/Bold Accessorizing
This trend is going to be one of my personal favorites going into the future. With all of the extravagant styles that are going to emerge in the coming months, this one is going to be huge, especially when larger events begin again. Detached accessorizing could mean leg warmers, fingerless gloves, hats, bright colored tights, and more. These accessories, while most of them are for the colder months, could also be used as we transition from the bitter cold into early spring. Perfect for an added layer of sophistication over a muted outfit or even for outdoor dining.
Sequins and Metallics
Something we all should be excited for is the long awaited resurgence of sequins and metallics. While not many celebrated New Years this year for obvious reasons, it may just be socially acceptable to be wearing these styles out past December 31st. This is just another nod toward this widespread style evolution and extravagance we are going to see as time goes on. Very similar to the same fashion evolution that occurred post-pandemic during the roaring 1920s. Sequin pants, purses, and going out tops are definitely going to be something to look forward to as the warmer months approach.
Knitwear
During quarantine, almost a year ago, so many people took up many new hobbies. Whether it was baking, roller skating, or working out, people really went out of their comfort zones. However, multiple news outlets have been talking about the rise in popularity in regards to knitting. Something nobody nor their grandmothers saw coming, knitting and now knitwear have become so popular. Funky sweaters and crochet accessories have now become all the rage thanks to brands like Paloma Wool and House of Sunny as well as influencers like @LinMick on Instagram. This trend is super versatile and easy to thrift or make at home which makes it so appealing to so many people.
With all of that being said…
While some may feel like they have been stuck in a fashion limbo or that their pre- pandemic style doesn’t match their new and improved outlook on everything, fear no more. With all of these amazing trends coming to thrift stores, malls, and online shops near you, there will be no need for an existential crisis. The light at the end of the tunnel of this pandemic leads to a new and improved appreciation for fashion and why we dress. A new age and modern resurgence of the roaring twenties. So whether you are testing these upcoming trends out at the grocery store or at your one in-person class, enjoy your newfound lack of fashion restraint. Immune of societal norms or personal reservations.
