The Comeback of Thin Brows

By Sara Jacalone

We’ve all noticed the Y2K revival that has flooded our trend boards in the past year. Do I have to say it, or do we know this by now? Fashion is cyclical. Every few decades we revert to styles thought to be abandoned; and frustratingly, it happens right after we finally rid our closets of those outdated styles. The latest modern adaptation of late 90s and early 2000s styles isn’t necessarily in apparel, rather in our appearance. Thin eyebrows are back, baby! I couldn’t be happier, to be honest; I personally adore the style.

Since the late 2000s, the style world has seen a few varying eyebrow trends, most notably the full brow. 2010s were dominated by thick, bold brows; a look following in the footsteps of models Cara Delevingne and Taylor Hill. We started ditching the tweezers and embracing a wild bushy brow look. Then, as I’m sure we all recall, our eyebrows were “on fleek”. Makeup artists lead a movement of crisp, groomed brows drawn on to thick perfection with pomade.

The people who plucked their eyebrows into oblivion to emulate models and celebrities like Kate

Moss and Christina Aguilera are in luck. Their eyebrows’ terminated growth is no longer something to be embarrassed about, it’s an early leap onto the bandwagon! Not so lucky are those who visited a microblading aesthetician and tattooed on-trend eyebrows beneath their natural ones.

Who was going to tell them that trends are cyclical?! Of course, no shade to those with perfectly shaped microbladed brows!

There are some micro influencers that I follow who adopted the skinny brow look early: the primary one that comes to mind being Gabbriette Betchel (@gabbriette on Instagram). She compliments her rocker chic style with thin, drawn on eyebrows that enhance her edgy look. Mononymous model Cannelle (@canfrgu on Insta) recently started rocking a thin, bleached brow look to compliment her bleach blond dreadlocks. While I’m on the topic, I’ll touch on the bleached eyebrow trend. A striking look on all skin tones, bleached or colored brows have found their way into 2022 lookbooks. On lighter skin, bleached brows are a way to say “eff it!” and not have to worry

about keeping up with the ever-growing hair. Bleached brows on darker complexions do the opposite by adding a stark contrast. The best part is that eyebrows grow and replenish rapidly and can always be dyed back to their original shade so there is minimal commitment anxiety.

Key takeaways here are as follows: thin brows are creeping back to prominence whether you like it or not. Makeup trends come and go and come again, the same way flared jeans left after the 70s and popped back up a few decades later. Therefore, never make any permanent changes that you may later regret when they go out of style (or, I suppose, you could go into hiding until the trend cycles again). Finally, dig your tweezers out from the bottom of your makeup bag because thin is in!
