Ten Easy Tips to Help You Become More Sustainable

By: Angelina Bojarski

Sustainability “focuses on meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs” (Investopedia) It is composed into three tiers: economic, environmental, and social. Here are ten relatively easy tips on how to become more sustainable in your life for this upcoming Earth Day.

One: Invest in a reusable water bottle

Did you know that one reusable water bottle is equivalent to one hundred and sixty-seven plastic bottles? For one person that is an insane amount of plastic to be producing! Now, you might be thinking to yourself, “why would I go out and spend more money?” However, when you think of how much money you’ll be saving this investment is worth it. Plus, you can find a reusable water bottle at Target for less than $20!

Two: Take shorter showers

Personally, I have a bad habit of taking long showers. However, shorter showers can save water and energy! Also, by taking shorter showers you’re not only helping the environment, you’re also helping your skin and hair. Too much water exposure can lead to drier skin and hair.

Three: Turn off lights when not using them

This seems almost too simple. Yet, you’d be surprised how many people leave lights on when they don’t even need them! Turning your lights off around the house when not in use saves energy and makes bulbs last longer. Plus, it’ll lower the cost of your electricity bill.

Four: Shop second hand

Shopping second hand doesn’t have to be shopping at a thrift store. It could be buying items from a yard sale, or even someone in your community. Any pre-owned good is considered to be “second-hand.” Second-hand apparel is essential to keeping clothing out of landfills because unfortunately, 84% of clothing ends up in landfills.

Five: Save your plastic bags

Did you know you can crochet an ordinary plastic bag into a shopping bag? By doing so, you’re reusing your plastic bag and you now have a bag you can use over-and-over again! These bags can come in different sizes and even colors.

Six: Walk, bike, and/or take public transportation

Next time you need to run an errand think about whether or not you need to drive there. If not, use one of these options! Walking, biking, or even taking public transportation are much more eco-friendly. They help reduce the amount of carbon emissions produced by cars which is 8,887 grams per gallon of gasoline.

Seven: Start a compost bin

Composting is another way to recycle. However, only certain items are able to go into the composting bin, since the contents are meant to decompose over time. Items include: egg shells, coffee grounds, shredded newspaper, fruits, and vegetables. All you need to make a compost bin at home is energy materials, bulking agents, air and water!

Eight: Look for recyclable packaging

Packaging that is recyclable is much more eco-friendly. This type of packaging will break down faster and doesn’t take as long to decompose. It is also much better for the environment rather than styrofoam and most cardboard.

Nine: Live Smaller

Overconsumption is a huge problem faced by consumers. Donate items that no longer serve you and only buy products you truly need!

Ten: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Remember the saying we were always taught as kids? The combination of all three of these allows for a great first step toward a sustainable lifestyle. Reduce energy being produced, reuse products you already own, and make sure you’re recycling properly.
