Styling One Piece Different Ways

By Stephanie Konya

One rule of thumb is to never buy for one occasion; something I personally try to do is come up with different ways to wear an article of clothing before buying it. Despite what some people may say, repeating outfits is allowed! When shopping for new clothes, it is essential to know what styles and colors suit you; a lot of women tend to stick to what they consider to be a uniform. Their “uniform” is personalized by them, and they follow a specific formula of clothes and colors that they look stylish in.

Following the concept of buying pieces of clothing that accent a specific person, a capsule wardrobe is extremely more useful than shopping for one event at a time. A capsule wardrobe consists of owning staple items that can be reworn for multiple occasions and can be dressed up or down, but it is important to have a few pieces of clothing to showcase an individuals’ creativity.

Jeans are a perfect example of an article of clothing that should most definitely be included in everyone’s wardrobe. Denim can be seen as a casual piece, but the material can flatter any body shape especially because of all the different styles and washes/colors. Mom fit, straight leg, skinny jeans, slim fit, and dad jeans are just a small list of the variety of styles jeans can come in; going along with that denim is available in different colors to allow individuals the option to showcase their creativity when developing outfits with jeans. Jeans are also available at all stores; my personal favorite jeans are from Hollister, Target, and Princess Polly.

I styled a pair of mom fit light wash jeans, available at Zara three different ways: a night out, attending a work meeting, and running errands:

For the first look I went with a simple black crop top with cuffed sleeves, a mini Jacquemus bag, and the Veja Esplar Logo Sneakers in black. This outfit is shown above and can be considered a look for running errands. Depending on how comfortable a person wants to be they could exchange the crop top with an oversized graphic tee as well.

In the picture to above, I styled these jeans for someone who is attending a work meeting. With jeans it is essential to make sure you pair a professional looking top, so the jeans do not appear too casual. I saw these baby blue heels on Zara’s website and decided they would be perfect to add flare to the pair of jeans. When attending work meetings, it is essential to have your work tote alongside you, which is why I added the Houndstooth tote from Kate Spade. Blazers are the definition of professional and pairing this specific brown colored blazer with a simple cream turtleneck allows the perfect amount of balance between professional and comfortable. The turtleneck is available at Banana Republic and comes in six other colors, a perfect example of allowing individuals to be able to choose a color that looks best on them! Zara, ASOS, and H&M tend to have a widespread selection of blazers like the brown one shown.

For the last event I generated an outfit for a night out; something casual yet dressy, pictured below to the right. For the top I found a green silk crop top with a tie back, also from Zara and paired it with a tortoise clutch, that can also be a shoulder bag. The clutch is available online at a brand called Olivia & Co. When going out, either with the girls or on a date, a clutch and/or shoulder bag is essential because no one wants to carry around a tote bag while dancing in the club! To add a bit of sophistication to this outfit, I added the black leather oversized blazer from Zara, another essential to the capsule wardrobe! Harper’s Bazaar refers to black as timeless and the specific color will never go out of date. Sticking with the color black, I added the black laced heels, available at Pretty Little Thing. Adding a pair of heels with any jean will help dress the denim up and these heels specifically match the silk top due to the ties above the ankles.

Jeans are only one example of an article of clothing that can be layered and/or styled in various ways. Before styling outfits, it is essential to gain an understanding of an individual's style and how likely they are to take a risk, but jeans are a piece that will never go out of date!
