Red Dress Highlight: Lucas Circello

Stephanie Konya

Lucas Circello, @lucascircello recently revealed his evening red gown in honor of the Go Red for Women foundation. A picture of the gown is shown below modeled by Julia Wazeter, a fellow student at Jefferson.

Circello explained that, he developed his design by comparing unsuccessful and successful women to characters. Circello’s mood board, pictured below, helped him develop the concept and figure out the direction he wanted to go in for his red dress. His goal was to capture the persona of queens; evil and good.

Circello stated, ever since he was three years old, he was mesmerized by the concept of Disney princesses. He wanted his red dress to follow the same concept so he could develop a dress made for a princess. This dress has been something he was thinking about since he was a mere three years old. The silhouette was inspired by various combinations including: the live remakes of Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast and also by the spring/summer collection of designer Paolo Sebastions in 2018. He wanted to distribute the feeling of being a princess, so whoever is wearing his dress would feel like their own princess. Circello realized that not all women in history were seen as princesses, so he focused on powerful women in general; instead of focusing only on successful women, he also went into depth of the foiled and those considered tyrants. This design was an abstract idea that Circello was able to put to life after constructing it throughout his whole life. He designed this red dress to combine the elegance of women, but also their unpredictable behavior; which is demonstrated through his inspiration. Disney princesses are the perfect image of elegance while evil queens and boisterous tyrants demonstrate erratic behavior.
