NeckLines, Necklines, Necklines

By Sara Osterhout

When picking out an outfit, you should be aware of what neckline is present so you can pair it with the perfect hairdo. Some necklines will flatter updos while others won't, for example, a higher neckline would flatter an updo more than if your hair was down. Have you ever noticed the need to put your hair up with a turtleneck for example? There's a science behind it. While with a lower neckline, strapless for example, your look will work better with your hair down. As seen in the picture on the left: a hairdo can totally elevate or ruin an outfit. I love all these looks (my favorite is the middle). But you can see they all chose for their hair to be down in some way. Even Taylor has a low ponytail to have her hair down in the back. I think all their hair stylists used this neckline theory to choose the style. Although all the women have a similar dress you can see how different the outfits now look with a slightly different hairstyle. Elevate your outfits by using these same tactics in your own everyday outfits.

What type of outfit are you wearing?

There are also some additional rules of hairdos other than just the neckline of an outfit. You must know the vibe and shape of your outfit to pick a hairdo. For example, if your outfit is loud you should keep your hairdo pretty simple and classic so the attention is all for the clothes. I also love to match my hair to my level of intensity. For example, if I'm wearing a sleek dress (maybe silk) I like to wear my hair in a sleek style like a slick back bun. When my outfit is crazy and all over the place, I like to have fun curls that match the outfit. I love matching my style to my hair; it's fun and creative to play with new styles you haven't done before.

Some ideas?

Now, to fill you in on some trending hairstyles is very easy because there are a lot of them. Ribbon and lace are used a lot recently in hairstyling. You can use ribbon in a half up half down hairstyle, braids, pigtails, and so many more ways. One of my favorite recent discoveries is the new runway hairstyle of corset braids. In New York Fashion Week, this look debuted in Christian Siriano's show; created by the talented Lacy Redway. You can also easily tie in any ribbon color to your outfit. The coquette style has been very popular recently.

Hairstyles on different face shapes

The reason why people look better or worse in different hairstyles is because of face shape. There are a lot of tips and tricks you can follow to find out which face shape you are and then what hairstyle would suit it. Being aware of your facial shape can help facilitate your creative direction of new hairstyles you want to try. Looking at the chart below, you can find your face shape and see the most flattering hairstyles you can try. These styles will not only suit you but they can make you more confident and elevate your outfit.

Bangs are in

Messy bangs are in. I know you have been seeing everyone and their mother with these messy bangs that just go with so many hairstyles and look so effortless. If you're still feeling unsure about messy bangs, I will give you some examples of celebrities who rock this iconic look. Emily Ratajkowski, Florence Pugh, Taylor Swift, Jenna Ortega, and Heidi Klum all have hopped on the trend. Look at these celebrities recent red carpet pics and tell me they don’t look amazing with a bang. Celebrity hairstylist Andrew Fitzsimons, who has worked with A-listers like JLo and the Kardashians, says “wispy bangs will be the fringe of choice this year.” Take it from him, these messy wispy bangs truly fit every face shape and are a good switch up from your regular style.

Make it your own!

Play around with different styles that match your outfits, face shape and overall vibe. Have fun with it! I know it can feel superficial to try to have the perfect hairdo and outfit but having those things help you with your confidence, which is all that matters at the end of the day. I hope exploring some creative new hairstyles can help you be the most confident version of yourself.
