How to Travel to New York City on a Budget

1. Visit Times Square!

Everyone visits time square to see the cultural heart of New York City, and why wouldn’t they? Although looking at the exciting and colorful buildings isn't the only thing to do. You can visit crossroads of the world to see free entertainers and you can experience the world’s largest digital art exhibition. Every night from 11:57 pm to midnight, the world’s largest digital art exhibition is displayed on the Times Square billboards and they are all synchronized. You can even see the tonight show with Stephen Colbert live (request free tickets online ahead of time)!


2. Take a scroll through central park!

Don’t just pass through central park, enjoy it! Stroll through to see the marvelous views, dine in, visit the zoo, go ice skating, and more!


3. Take a Ride on The Staten Island Ferry!

The Staten Island Ferry not only gives you an amazing view of the Statue of Liberty, but it’s free! No matter what time of the year it is, the ferry operates 24 hours a day, seven days per week. There are also food and beer concessions available on each boat.


4. Check Out Showfields!

Wanna see the most interesting store in the world? From solving mysteries to going down slides to laying on a bed that is half hot and half cold… you will never forget this experience! Don’t forget to book your free admission ahead of time!

5. Visit Bryant Park!

Enjoy the scenery at Bryant Park while eating lunch, ice skating around the park, riding on a French-style carousel, or watching performers showcase their talents during Broadway in Bryant Park and Piano in the Park.There are also yoga and tai chi classes, knitting circles, chess tournaments and literary events.


6. Go See The High Line!

While standing 30 feet above street level, you will see amazing views of the Hudson River and Manhattan's cityscape. While at The High Line, check out the public art installations, food vendors, and the 23rd Street Lawn.


7. Check Out Fifth Avenue!

Bergdorf Goodman, Tiffany & Co., Gap, Van Cleef & Arpels, the Disney Store, Sephora, and more! If you love shopping, between 34th and 59th street you will be in shopaholic heaven! Even if you're not planning on spending any money, a stroll along Fifth Avenue is a must!

8. Shop at SOHO!

A lot of people know SOHO for shopping, but shopping on a budget calls for thrift stores! Artists and Fleas is a marketplace that welcomes new artists and merchants every two weeks. Even if you’re not going to buy anything, it is worth seeing the most unique sellers in NYC. They also have special events such as vintage nights, where there are cocktails and live music available so keep an eye out!

9. Explore the Grand Central Terminal!

Are you a foodie or shopaholic? If so, this is the place for you! At this beautiful train station, taking in the scenery isn’t all you can do. Go for a bite to eat or shop till you drop!


10. Visit Rockefeller Center and the Top of the Rock Observation Deck!

From beautiful sculptures, a huge skating rink, a view of NBC Studios, to stores and restaurants, Rockefeller Center and the Rock are places you have to experience! During the wintertime, you can see the famous Christmas tree lit up, although there is plenty to do year round. The Top of the Rock Observation Deck offers some of the best views of Manhattan!

11. Go to the beach!

I know what you are thinking, the beach in New York? Although you will have to pay for your subway fare, you can visit Rockaway, Brighton and Coney Island! Who doesn’t want to relax on the beach and walk the boardwalk in one of the best states?

12. Outdoor Yoga in Prospect Park!

From downward dog to savasana, you can do it all for free in Prospect Park! This happens every Thursday at 7pm from the beginning of June until the end of August. All you have to do is fill out the online waiver before your first class and zen here you come! After a relaxing yoga sesh, take a walk around Brooklyn’s main green space to see it’s wild trails, fishing clinics, splash pad, lakeside skating rink, etc.

13. Watch a Movie Outside!

Want to enjoy the nice weather and a movie under the stars? You can watch indie films, classics, and recent blockbusters all over the city! Just make sure to check each location's website to see what film is playing and what time! Locations: Brooklyn Bridge Park, Pier 63, Bryant Park, Prospect Park, Hotel Hugo or Coney Island.


14. Feeling Cultural or Artsy? Go to a Museum!

There are so many museums throughout the city that offer free admission, and numerous locations offer reduced rates. Some of these museums are the American Folk Art Museum, the National Museum of the American Indian, the Museum of Modern Art, the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, and the Brooklyn Children’s Museum. Although it doesn’t stop there! Research the different museums before you go to see what you are most interested in.


15. Walk Across the Brooklyn Bridge!

Take a stroll across the famous Brooklyn Bridge, while getting a beautiful view of the Brooklyn Skyline, the Manhattan Skyline, and the Statue of Liberty!
