Every fashionista knows that thrifting is now the cool way to shop, but it can be so overwhelming. Whether you’re a thrifting pro that goes once a week or new to thrifting it is a lot of work and can be daunting. Thrift stores are usually jam packed with everything from clothes to furniture and can sometimes look like a bunch of junk. Let’s break down the art of thrifting to get rid of all the stress that tends to come with it.
First things first, know what your personal style is going in. Know what you like and what you don’t like, what fits your aesthetic, and what makes you feel comfortable. Yes, thrifting is a good way to get items out of your comfort zone that are inexpensive but don’t go overboard buying things that don’t match your personal style. Instead, get one or two items to try out that are a little more adventures and keep the rest matching your aesthetic. After you know what you’re looking for and what fits your personal style, put together a game plan of where you’re going. Plan out which thrift stores you are going to that day, and make sure to set a budget. This will help you stay on track and not go overboard, which can be so easy to do when thrifting. My biggest tip is to eat before going thrifting!! Vintage shopping all day is a lot of work and can really shut you down if you’re not having much luck. Trust me, you will thank me later.
Now it’s time to go thrifting! Once you get in your first store it can be extremely overwhelming. Depending on where you are there can be clothing, home, kids stuff, etc. so focus in and pick a starting point. I usually start at the section I am looking for the most items in. While sifting through the racks some pieces can seem questionable but trust me when I say if it is a maybe, grab it and reevaluate at the end, you never know how it could fit. Another tip that makes a huge difference is to not look exclusively in your size, this is vital. If you’re looking for something oversized or just don’t trust sizes it is very beneficial to look in racks that are a size up and down from you. My last tip is to never underestimate the shoes. You can sometimes find some great ones, especially now because so many trendy styles are so easily found from the past decades, like the beloved square toe.
Next time you go thrifting keep this article in mind to make sure you are doing everything you can to have a successful thrifting experience!!
