Did you know that April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month? Not only is there a whole month dedicated to spreading awareness, but there is also a day to shop and support. Nineteen years ago, the Peace Over Violence organization declared a Wednesday in April as Denim Day. This year it is April 28th.
According to the organization, Denim Day all started in the 1990’s when a woman was sexually assaulted. When the case was brought to trial, the person responsible was found not guilty because the woman was wearing jeans and the Supreme Court justices said it is not possible for a man to take off a women’s jeans by himself. The next day, multiple members of the Senate wore jeans to show their support. Denim Day has now become a day to show support for sexual assault victims and awareness to the wrong-doings in the court room.
Wearing denim on Denim Day is a small act one can do to show their support for men and women who have been sexually assaulted. Join me by wearing jeans on April 28th and use #denimday to spread the word.
