Crochet - Slow Fashion

By: Skylar Fox

In a world of Shein and fast fashion, there’s a power that comes with slow fashion. And by slow, I mean slowwwwww. Handmade knits and colorful textiles have found a resurgence in fashion the past few seasons, and especially right now - people are bored of muted colors, sweats, and simple silhouettes. We’ve spent a year at home! Maximilism is going to be the wave for the next season or two. It’s fun, colorful, and reminiscent of all the best decades for fashion.

We’ve all come out of quarantine with some random new skill. For a lot of people, yarn was big! Learning how to punch needle, knit, and for me - learning how to crochet. Popular social media apps like TikTok boosted the resurgence of all things textiles when creators started blowing up with their handmade designs (this is what inspired me).

It’s understandable why consumers go for fast-fashion knit pieces...even if they realize it’s unethical. Learning to crochet took me a minute, and all the failed attempts took much longer. I went through a few different tutorials, patterns, and balls of knotted yarn before finding my groove. Even after finding a groove, I realized pretty quickly that those crocheted blankets don’t just take a few days to make. Weeks and even months can go into a huge project, giving handmade pieces a big price tag.

But that’s the art of slow fashion! It makes everything so much more special and meaningful. When retro knits like these always seem to come back around in style, why not save for something one of a kind? The sustainability aspect of handmaking clothing is unmatched . I challenged myself to be as sustainable as possible by ripping yarn out of failed pieces to apply to new ones.

There’s a place in the crochet trend for every style, making it accessible for every subculture. From avant-garde high fashion pieces to boho beachy outfits, the versatile practice has a space for everyone. Lil crochet crossbody bags, bikini tops, and airy dresses will be making their way around all the fast fashion stores in these coming weeks.

I’m sure this summer we will see plenty of colorful textures and unique silhouettes from this trend, and after a long year (and then some) of being inside, I’m looking forward to it!
