Bridgerton Fashion

Amanda Heineman

Though the immediate hype surrounding the hit netflix series “Bridgerton” has died down some, the influence it has had on today’s fashion and styles have not been forgotten. Gathering inspiration from the show’s regency-era costumes, today’s fashion trends feature the styles of the ladies of “Bridgerton”. Even couture designers such as Chanel, Christian Dior, and Fenti have put a regency era spin on their spring 2021 runway fashions.

Thanks to social media platform TikTok, corsets have exploded in popularity as a fashion piece. While traditionally, corsets were worn as an undergarment, it has transitioned to being a piece that is shown, rather than hidden. Whether worn by itself or layered, a corset adds an extra layer of excitement to any outfit.

Other trends that have been rising together due to Bridgerton costumes are empire waists and wide square necklines. Empire waists were the trademark of the regency era. Prior to this time period, waistlines were much lower, falling at the natural waist or slightly lower on the hips. The square necklines also came into fashion during this time period. Now, we can see the influence of these styles in many new spring and summer lines coming out.

Whether short sleeved or long sleeved, the sleeves we see in the Bridgerton costumes are made of a very light material, and are slightly balloon-y. The sleeves in this time period were more for elegant decoration than for functionality, hence the shawls, cloaks, and overcoats that were essential. Today, we can see this style of sleeve coming back strong in all sleeve lengths.
