2021 Fashion Week

By Sara Carango

We all know New York Fashion week is the place to spot upcoming trends for the season. We all know trends come in cycles and right now Y2K is one of the biggest and most popular trends; the runways this year really reflected that.

One of the hottest trends we saw on the runway this year was sequins, from dresses, to tops and even full-on sequin jumpsuits. We are used to seeing classic black but this year a lot of designers are implementing color into their looks like this one from Connor Ives Ready To Wear collection. Having such a unique intricate piece in a RTW collection makes it even more special.

Let's talk about color! Usually when we get into the fall and winter months we tend to

lean more towards neutrals, blacks, browns, muted tones of red, oranges and yellows. This year we saw A LOT of color on the runway. Bubblegum pink, lavender, yellow and teal, just to name a few, were huge this year. The early 2000s were all about color: neons and bright pinks like we have seen on Paris Hilton and Britney who never seemed to care about the season, for them it was always the season to wear neon pink. This piece from Balmain is so fun and bright and would be a fun pop to any bland fall wardrobe

Finally, we have the most popular fall trend and probably my favorite we have knits, we all have that classic sweater that we cannot wait to put on when it finally reaches below 70 degrees. We are seeing a ton of knits again this year but this time a little different. The cut of the knits is much more form fitting: bodycon skirts, tighter knit dresses and so on. I personally think this trend comes from the body positivity movement to embrace the body you are in and not try to cover it up with a huge ill-fitting sweater, this is a trend I personally will get behind, in the fall I find that it is so easy to lose touch with your feminine side when it feels like you’re drowning in your clothes. One of my favorites I have seen so far is this one from Jonathan Simkhai that can be purchased on Revolve!

All in all, I think these trends will be some of the most popular this season and seasons to come. I can’t wait to see how these trends get styled by some of our favorite celebrities and even around campus!
